This series is a continuation of the original Oppression Fighters series, with Angela Davis, Malcolm X, John Lewis, James Baldwin, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg joining the growing list of activists that have been portrayed in this one layer stencil portrait style by The Artist Oliver James.
With wildly different ideas and approaches, Davis, Malcolm, Lewis, Baldwin, and RBG have changed the world and made it a better place by standing up and choosing to boldly fight against systems of oppression to better the lives of those around them. Angela Davis is an American political activist, philosopher, academic, scholar, and author. John Lewis was an American politician and civil rights activist who served in the United States House of Representatives. James Baldwin was an American writer and activist. Ruth Bader Ginsburg, or RBG as she is affectionately known, was an American lawyer and jurist who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Malcolm X was a Muslim minister and human rights activist who was a prominent figure during the civil rights movement.
Using acrylic spray paint on wood, this series of black, single-layer portraits are sprinkled with mostly silver and some vibrant color accents to bring depth and dimension to the portraits in a similar way that the subjects themselves brought depth and dimension to life and the civil rights movement.
