Anacostia Mural Festival

The Artist Oliver James was excited to be a part of a dynamic group of artists helping to transform Anacostia's commercial and cultural corridor into a powerful visual experience. This year, over 100 artists created 100+ murals in 18 days, contributing to a bold vision: Washington’s East of the River as a living open-air museum.

Located across from 322 40th St NE this large-scale mural hosts twelve portraits of Black community leaders: Sammy Davis Jr. (Dr. Ashley Brown), Madam C.J. Walker (Courtney Savoy), James Baldwin (Tshianzi M.), Billie Holiday (Lewis Waters) Malcolm X (Ced the Man), Marian Anderson (Luther Wright), W.E.B. Du Bois (Lynch Got Lost), Mahalia Jackson (Morgan Cook), Dr MLK Jr. (Doudgy Charmant), Mary McLeod Bethune (Taleya Johnson), Marion Barry (Jahru), Jay Coleman (Dr Nene Tay). The wall also hosts three African fabrics across the lower wall by MJ on the Wall (Left), Brianna Pippens (Middle), The Artist Oliver James (Right).

Thank you to the Capital Hill Boys Club and all of its sponsors and supporting memebers.

Using acrylic paint on roughly 30'x 10' brick wall, this mural is a painting of a popular  African fabric print to represent the Black communities that live in and around Anacostia and NE, area. Prints are available in the Prints section.
